Information on Isaac Land

From the history of Pleasant Union Baptist Church….
On April 15, 1871, Pleasant Union Baptist Church was duly constituted with a presbytery of the following: Isaac Land, Ordained Minister; Levi Cagle, Ordained Deacon; Jeremiah Warren, Ordained Deacon.

The original log church was located just a few miles from the church’s present location. (
click on the image to see a better view, but it is a copy of copy…)

On July 29, 1912, the membership approved to build a new church building “at the forks of the road at James W. Gay’s house”. On January 8, 1913, James W. Gay deeded the land for the site of the new church and on August 23, 1913, the membership voted to give their new church building the same name as the old church.

In 1936, during a Saturday conference service, the church burned. It was rebuilt at the same location. In 1963, the church building was remodeled and in May of 1972, the Sunday School addition was completed and dedicated. In March, 1992, the addition of a Fellowship Hall began.

As the church has grown and facilities changed, the membership has held strong in its faith in God and in serving our Lord Jesus Christ.

The history goes on to list the pastors of the church from 1871 through present day….I’m listing the first five or six here:

1871-1876 Isaac Land
1876 H.G.B. Turner
1876-1878 W.B. Allred
1878-1879 J.D. Harris
1879-1881 J. Holbert
1881-1883 J.D. Harris

and The Scream by Edvard Munch I've posted here:

Father's Day, 2008

A busy, busy Father's Day......the contemporary service at church followed by Bible study followed by a Varsity lunch at church followed by a family meal at Denise and Rod's.

Rachel and her Dear Daddy before leaving for church.

Rachel

Me....taken at Denise's house before I changed clothes.

Rachel took this of both of us.....

Papa Cooper opening Denise's gift.....leather belts.

David knew Papa Cooper likes the Dirty Harry movies. Papa received all five on dvd along with an official poster and a nifty badge. We rounded out the picture with Rod's gun in Dirty Harry style.

Chris got his father a pair of overalls!

Relaxing and eating before the actual meal......

Nanny and Papa Cooper

Rachel, Melody, Josh (hat over face)

Denise.......she and Rod prepared a great meal for us.

After our meal David took a nap on the couch, I took a nap on David, and Rachel decided she had to join us.

Father's Day in Canton

We went to Dad's for lunch on Saturday. It was a little strange as we had not children with us. Rachel was working....Matt was in Toccoa serving as a groomsman in a friend's wedding. We had a great time though we had to leave a little early since David and I were going to a concert at Chastain. Also, I did a very stupid thing......I gave Daddy something I had already given him. How insane is that! Sorry Daddy. :(

Chris and sweet, sweet Bowen. He's growing so fast.

David......doesn't he look like he's telling me to stop taking pictures?

Mmmmmmmm......Mrs. Gwen's applie pie! We had homemade ice cream too.

Rachel

Rachel helped out with the 5-year-olds this year. She doesn't look too happy.....

Rachel and her friend Katie.

Another Tour of Duty....as a Groomsman

Matt's second wedding of the Spring/Summer......The young lady with Matthew in these pictures is Kayla. She was nice enough to send them to me. I can't get them sized right with my software, so I'm going to see if Rachel can resize them properly for me. Until then all I have are these smaller sizes. :0

Land Reunion 2008

This year the Land Reunion was once again held at Sharp Mountain Baptist Church in their well appointed fellowship hall. It was an extremely hot day, and we were all grateful for the air conditioning. What weenies we have become since the old days when we had dinner right outside the followship hall along the tables with NO covering and NO air conditioning in the church where many of the adults would go to sing following lunch.

Rachel snapped this of David looking all big, bad, and mean.

All of Marvin's family represented at the reunion.....along the back you can see from left to right Jack, David, and John. Starting at the left again you see Pat, Barbara's grandaughter, Barbara, Barbara's grandson, Rachel, Lisa, Kathy, and Gwen. In front of Lisa is Sherry. In front of her are her two kids and all the way on the right is another one of Barbara's grandkids.

Another shot.....

The gravesite of "Pa Jim" and Granny Land.

One of Pa Jim's and Granny's young daughters.

Another daughter.....
Aunt Dessie and Uncle Roy's two infant sons are buried in this plot as well.

Here are close-ups of their headstones.

The view down the hill (now that they've cut all the trees to build houses) from Granny's grave towards Highway 5.

The view down the cemetery drive looking from Granny's grave. The church is on the other side of the trees on the left.

This image was taken later at Daddy's at the lake.

Looking out across the lake.

From the end of Amy Lane looking back up to Marvin Land Lane across the pasture at the lake.

All the Daylillies at the end of Amy Lane.

I love this image of the old tractor (?) sitting in the pasture.

When I was a little girl this was the tree where the "path" down to the lake took a turn and then opened up the bank along the lake. I remember standing under this tree with Pa Land more than once.....

On the other side of the lake heading towards the lake.

The roadside at the end of Amy Lane looking up towards where the homes of Granny Land and Pa Land used to be (at the top of the hill)

Taken down at the old barn site. See the wooden stake in the middle....That's where the middle of the road will be once they widen it. :(

A wider shot....go to the middle of the picture and then down to the brown spot. That's where the stake is in the picture shown above.

Standing where Pa Land's walkway used to begin looking towards the garden site on the left of the road. In the upper middle section of the picture you can see another stake signifying the "new" middle of the road.

My driver for our little tour around Papa Buddy's place. :)
