One Family...Five Generations

Here is another image cousin Ray sent me. There are five generations in this photo. Granny Land (Amanda) is seated on the left. Behind her is her son Marvin. Sitting next to Granny is Marvin's daughter, Ruth. Standing behind Ruth is her son Mike, and Mike is holding his son, Ray.

This picture was taken in Pa Land's house in the living room. The gas heater can be seen behind Mike.

Views of Karen

This picture was taken at Nanny and Papa Blanton's house on Ridge Road. Look at the thrift lining the drive. Wasn't it beautiful. If I rememer correctly Karen was sick when this picture was made....she came down with the mumps or something the next day.

Perhaps she can tell me the cat's name.......

Same picture as the one above....you can see more of her legs in the image above.
The dining room set in this picture was beautiful as I remember it. For some reason there are several pictures of Karen sitting on the table or standing on it.....I'm assuming this was made on Becon Hill Boulevard in Atlanta. After we moved to Red Oak Mom gave the dining room furniture to one of Dad's employees. Sadly their house burned down and the furniture was lost.

Dad's Second Visit to the Francis Land House

During Mom and Dad's trip to Virginia Beach after Matthew was born Dad became very interested in an old home there known as the Francis Land House. He became very interested in our family history from that point on and thanks to him my children now know for certain who is who back at least eight generations.

The docents were really interested in getting to talk with a bona fide "Land".

Daddy, of course, had a great time with the costumed ladies......

Rachel and Buck went along on the trip as well. This trip was sometime after 1990

Rachel's School Picture

This is my Aunt Rachel. The date on the picture speaks for itself.:)

Santa Makes an Appearance at the Hogie Shop

It would seem that folks don't just drink coffee at the Hogie Shop. You can also place an order with Santa for the big day. I wonder what Dad asked for....
Cousin Marsha stopped in and she got to place her order as well.

Coffee at the Hogie Shop

Even though he's been retired for awhile Dad heads off to "work" each morning during the work week. He joins other retired "workers" to exercise their coffee drinking arm and they discuss current events. From front to back is Bob Johnson, Herman Cantrell, Bob Wester, and my father.

Where can I go to get me a job like that?

The JWJ Land Family

Adult figures from left to right: JWJ Land, his wife Amanda, their children Marvin, Martha, and Homer. The two smaller girls are also children. From left to right: Lois and Dessie

From this family group we end up with the large family tree that meets yearly at Sharp Mountain for a reunion. Everyone in this photo is now gone.

JWJ was known as James or Jim. If I had known him I would have called him "Pa Jim". I was able to know his wife, Amanda. All of us great-grandkids called her Granny. In the picture my grandfather, Marvin, is standing next to Amanda.

This picture was taken at the Coker Farm. Before they lived on the Land property on Marvin Land Lane the family resided at Coker Farm. Then they moved to the Hasty Place near where the sawmill used to be on East Cherokee Lane, and finally they moved to the Land Property.

Mother, Son-in-Law, Grandson

This is a picture of my grandmother, Elizabeth (Lizzie) Scott Land, Howard Hilton (Rachel's first husband), and Howard and Rachel's son, Bill.
Once she became a grandmother Lizzie was known as Momma Land...notice the hat she's holding. This was taken on the front steps of Granny' Land's house. By the time I came along Granny had moved across the road, so I never saw her house lived in....It's nice to see some flower pots on the steps.
Howard served in the Air Force. This was probably taken around 1940.

Avery School House

The first picture is Avery School House in 1949. This is the building where my father went to school.

This is a larger and smaller image of Avery School House from 1911. This building burned in 1929. Then the image above was built.

A School Picture of My Father

This was taken when Dad was attending Avery School House

Rachel and Buck

Rachel and Buck Carson, my aunt and uncle. They both retired from Lockheed and lived in Marietta. When I was growing up they visited us in Red Oak about once every couple of weeks. They are both gone now, but I like this picture because it's how I remember them best.

Granny Land

Granny Land lived to be 102. During her last few years we had huge birthday parties for her. I remember her wearing this dress. The heater looks like the big one that sat in Pa Land's living room so I think it was taken at his house, but I don't remember the chair.

High School Friends

Who is the tough looking guy sporting leather on the left? Why that's my father taken around 1945-46 across the street from Canton High School.
Beginning at the left is John Land, Carol Beavers, Clyde Lawson, and Max Hicks.
Mr. Beavers went on to become to principal with Fulton County. He passed away a few years ago. Mr. Lawson owns Lawson Cleaners. Mr. Hicks and his wife Jane used to visit with Mom and Dad occasionally after we moved to Canton. They both passed away several years ago.

Marvin Land

This is a picture of my grandfather...Marvin Land...to his granchildren, great-grandchildren, etc. he was known simply as Pa.

This picture was taken when Pa was somewhere between 18 and 20.

A Red Oak Trio

One of my favorite Red Oak pictures. When Daddy wasn't working and sometimes while he was we were always right there somewhere.

This picture shows the wonderful steps at the Red Oak house leading up the great front porch...my playground.

Yeah, I Was Cute...

Daddy helping me with my cake. Perhaps I was one....two. Chocolate cake? Mom made it? I'm not sure.

Various Views of Matthew

Random views of first born.....

I have absolutely no idea about this one.
No idea about this one either.

This one I know...its Katie and Matt all growed up.

Matt making music!
Matthew pondering something.

Practice Makes Perfect

This was taken at Red Oak....ninth or tenth grade, maybe.

Iwish I could find someone to cut my hair like that again and do it that well. Heavy sigh.....

Photos Snagged From Seth's Myspace Page

It seems as if Seth has been overseas an awfully long time. Since he's been there I haven't paid attention to various reports about attacks and the number of casualties. It's too upsetting. I hope he's home soon.

These pictures were on Seth's Myspace page several months ago. I wouldn't guess he's updated them any since they stopped letting the guys update their pages or even log onto them for security reasons.

These pictures remind me how far Seth has come from that little, tiny boy who used to get so mad when Matt and Adam would leave him out. He'd always come back in the house and sit by the playpen to talk to Rachel. He's not that little boy anymore.....

Thought this was interesting....guess that's what the 7-UP cans look like over there.

On patrol.......
Gee, don't we have enough money to give each guy his own cot? Damn those Democrats!

The little boy is now bonafide BADASS! When he comes home, believe me, I'll make no sudden movements....

A few Iraqi children.

Those walls you see are actually walls of living structures....places they call home...the Iraqis out in the rural areas as well as our soldiers.

Look Mommie I Can Read!

This was taken at Karen's house during Christmas. Matt decided to take a little rest and read. He was reading out load very loudly....so proud of himself. Then we noticed the book was upside down. We just had to get a picture.

Adam and Jessica

This was taken when Adam and his wife Jessica visited us while they were home on leave. I believe this is from Fall, 2006. They had come home from Iraq, but were anticipating an assignment in Germany.

Nanny Blanton

I used this picture in a post I wrote about JFK and her. They both died in November a year part.

Whose car is that?

Was this taken at the house on Ridge Road?

Rachel: Age 14

Yes, I know. She is quite beautiful. If only she would hang up her clothes, and clean her room once in awhile.

Ag Center Field Trip: 2006-2007

Each year the fourth graders in Carroll County visit the Agriculture Center for Ag Heritage Days for several demonstrations regarding living in Georgia in times long past. It is always a long, but fun-filled day.

Pa Land's House...Days Gone By

Cousin Ray emailed these pictures to me. Mike and Pa Land are in the back and Mike's children round out the front row...Ray, Jeff, and Adrian. Granny Land's house is in the background and they are standing across the road from Pa's house.

Daddy (John) and Ray are on the red tractor. When Dad brought this tractor home to Red Oak it was a mess. It was a pile of junk. He restored it fully, and it was a beautiful machine. All the kids loved to get a ride with Daddy on the tractor.

One day when I get enough of these pictures posted I'll have string together all of the ones with Daddy and kid on a tractor or golfcart. It's a Land Family tradition. This is again across the road from Pa Land's and Granny Land's (Amanda) house is in background along with the well. All that's left as I write this today is the big tree.

Here is Jeff in Pa Land's front yard looking towards Granny's. Notice all the cars. We always parked across the street from Pa's.

Ray on his bike in front of Pa's. This is how I remember my grandfather's house....not like it is today. This was back in the day when the grandkids could bring their bike and the moms weren't too afraid of cars because you could hear them coming a pretty far piece off. Now......it's dangerous to walk across the road to garden.
